It’s not always fun, and sometimes you are way too tired, but washing your face is not a step in your hygiene routine you should be skipping. It’s pretty much on the same level as brushing your teeth – it’s that important.
Washing your face is important because it helps keep your skin healthy. Think about it, your skin is exposed to all sorts of nastiness throughout the day: dirt, pollution, and dead skin cells, to name a few. That gunk will remain on your skin if it is not cleansed properly. This is why the American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing your face once in the morning, once in the evening, and after heavy perspiration.
Following these cleansing guidelines has so many benefits, such as:
Not washing the skin often enough can cause oils and dirt to build up and clog your pores. This leads to acne. Having a regular face cleansing routine will help keep acne under control so you can feel confident in your skin.
Did you know that washing your face regularly actually help balance your skin? If your skin feels tight and dry, cleansing twice a day with an alcohol-free cleanser and following up with a moisturizer can help get your skin back on track and restore its natural moisture.
Remember those nasty pollutants and dirt particles we talked about early? They are also a culprit in premature aging. Not cleansing the dirt and oils from your face can accelerate the aging process and lead to dull-looking skin. In contrast, when you do cleanse the skin regularly, it looks refreshed, bright, and healthy.
How should you be washing your face?
The answer: Very gently.
Your skin is delicate. You don’t want to use abrasive towels and scrub brushes on it. These can irritate the skin. All you need is a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, and your fingertips. (Using hot water can dry out your skin, no one wants that.) Remember to use soft hands when washing your face, and then to gently pat your skin dry with a towel when finished.
Need help finding a gentle but effective cleanser? I like foaming cleansers because they lather easily and help prevent me from scrubbing too hard on my skin. VIIVA’s Foaming Cleanser is becoming a quick favorite.
