The summer is nearing its end, and so now is the time to start booking that final, paradisiacal vacation. If you’re like me when planning for a vacation, you plan to gain at least a few pounds – I mean, what’s a vacation without plenty of pina coladas and French fries? But then when you return from vacation, you feel lethargic, and almost like you’re starting back at square one in your fitness journey. It can understandably be quite difficult to get back on the wagon of healthy eating when you’ve been living on a diet of donuts and lounging around, so I have a few ideas that can help you simultaneously balance your healthy lifestyle and vacation.
1. Plan Your “Treat Meals”
Planning when you will eat your “treat meals” – aka cheat meals, junk food, tasty foods, etc. – can help plenty. This way, you can still enjoy pizza but in a balanced amount. An example of a schedule would be that you have a healthy breakfast, lunch, and snack, and then plan to have your “treat meal” for dinner – this can save you thousands of calories and help curb weight gain.
2. Don’t Skip Breakfast
The whole purpose of a relaxing vacation is to not have a schedule – you can sleep in until 12 pm or lie on the beach for ten hours and no one can tell you “no.” But even though you should relax, do yourself a favor and make sure you’re still sticking to a meal schedule! I know that for myself, sometimes I’ll skip breakfast, have a light lunch, and then end up eating a monstrous dinner because I’m starving at the end of the day! Having breakfast each day will help provide you with the energy you need to go cliff-jumping or sight-seeing! Breakfast can also jumpstart your metabolism and help you maintain healthy body weight. 3. Stay Active!
Take a hike! You don’t have to visit the dusty hotel gym to maintain your healthy habits on vacation – you can incorporate exercise into your vacation! Sight-seeing, hiking, playing volleyball, going for a jog on the beach…there are so many options when it comes to being active while abroad.
4. Find an Accountability Buddy
Having someone around who knows and supports your fitness goals is so important; it’s much easier to accomplish a huge feat when you don’t feel like it’s just you against the world. You can coordinate your meal plans, or just go to them when you need emotional support. Having a buddy will make everything at least a little bit easier!
5. Don’t Beat Yourself Up
So, you spent the entire day chowing down on cookies and tacos…YOU ARE ON VACATION and that is completely okay! Don’t beat yourself up if you fell into the beguiling trap of that decadent chocolate cake – it’s bound to happen at least once! Just do your best to plan better for your next “treat meals,” and don’t let yourself trip into a spiral of negativity.
