How to actually stick to your New Year's Resolutions
For many people, the start of a new year is a time to set goals in order to improve and accomplish new things. Every year we promise ourselves that this is the year we will ACTUALLY stick to our goals. But we all know the story… a month in to it we lose momentum, motivation, and fall back into our old habits leaving these goals unfulfilled and forgotten.
When creating these New Years Resolutions, it’s important to remember 3 things that will help you achieve your goals.
Accountability: You need have a plan in place on how to stay accountable for the progress of your goals. This system can be something where you check off a box at the end of each day. It can be an app on your phone that helps you track your progress. It can be a family member following up with you regularly. It can be a friend who is working on the same goal with you. It doesn’t matter what method you choose, as long as it’s effective in keeping you accountable.
Flexibility: Setting goals can be exciting! We get caught up in the excitement and want to go big. But a few weeks later we realize that maybe we got a little too ambitious and start feeling overwhelmed. We realize that our goals may be slightly unrealistic with our schedule or circumstances. When this happens, don’t give up on your goals, adjust them. You may need to adjust numbers, dates, times or frequencies and that’s okay. Make it more manageable so that you can continue working towards your goals. Don’t be afraid to continually set new goals and adjust old goals throughout the year in order to help you achieve everything you put your mind to.
Motivation: Changing habits or learning something new takes time and isn’t always going to happen overnight or even over a couple weeks. During these times, it can be easy to get discouraged and lose motivation. It’s essential to stay motivated and keep up the momentum. So, when you are creating goals in the first place, write down your WHY for setting it. Remind yourself of this when things get tough. Write about your journey and progress, including the ups and downs to see just how far you’ve come. Reward yourself as you accomplish things along the way. These rewards shouldn’t distract you from your goals but push you to keep working hard. Find a good support system who will offer encouragement and help when you feel like you aren’t as motivated as you’d like to be.
By keeping these three simple things in mind, this will finally be the year you’ll follow through with your goals and accomplish amazing things!
